This year our pupils have taken on not one but two nationwide maths challenges.

The first was the UKMT 25th Anniversary Challenge. All of our Y5 & Y6 pupils took part in the United Kingdom Maths Tournament (UKMT) which was organised to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the UKMT.

It was an online, 45-minute, multiple-choice challenge that encouraged mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

“The UKMT’s 25th Anniversary Challenge was designed to promote a love of problem solving,” said Ms Szumlas, Prep’s Head of Maths. “The problems are designed to make students think and are accessible, yet challenging. It is recommended for Years 6-8 but I knew my pupils in Y5 were more than ready for this and they proved me right with outstanding results and Cassius and Max doing particularly well coming in the top 5! Congratulations to all the children who took part and special mention to Nathan, Sam and Oliver from Y6. The certificates arrived this week and I loved seeing their faces as I handed them out.”

After the excitement of the UKMT 25th anniversary Challenge came The Primary Mathematics Challenge (PMC). Aimed at pupils aged 9 - 11 years old, it is designed to make pupils think outside the box, and encourages enthusiasm and boosts pupils’ confidence in mathematics with problem solving and reasoning skills.

Congratulations to 25 pupils in Years 5 and 6 who won Bronze, 14 who won Silver and 12 Golds; Special mention to Cassius; Lolly, Olivia and Izi in Y5 and Charlie; Alice; Louise; Tamila; Alexandra; Oliver, Nathan and Aran from Y6 who not only won Gold certificates but also qualified for the bonus round!
