DT lessons have been hugely popular with our pupils this term! And no surprise when you see what they’ve been creating.
Our Year 4 pupils have been creating a go-kart. At the start of the term they spent time thinking about a possible design, focusing specifically at designing a brake system and a steady but comfortable seat.
“The children learn so much through this project,” says Mr Curran, who takes them for DT, “It’s not just basic engineering skills, it also encourages them to be imaginative and creative, to embrace their mistakes and show determination and resilience. I encourage them to go beyond their comfort zone and try something new.”
The pupils finished their go-karts before the end of term so had plenty of time for testing it in the Prep garden!
“The Year 4’s have been truly amazing. So many budding engineers here! We had some problems in testing including the main structure coming away from the seat. But we problem-solved in situ and repaired it in the pits within minutes! I loved every minute of this project and I know Year 4 did too,” said Mr Curran.
And it's not just Year 4s who’ve been busy in the DT room, Year 3 pupils were getting to grips with the basics, demonstrating great team working skills when it came to fixing wheels to a giant toolbox.
Mr Curran has got big plans for Y6 next term as they get started on an IET Formula Goblin car to race at the Greenpower Education Trust’s annual International Final at Goodwood Motor Circuit this Summer.
