Today at Latymer we celebrated Founder’s Day.
This annual celebration, which traditionally takes place on the final day of the first half term, felt particularly special, as we were able to come together again in person after last year’s ceremony took place virtually.
On Founder’s Day we commemorate and give thanks for the philanthropic gesture of Edward Latymer who in 1624 bequeathed money for eight poor boys of Hammersmith to be clothed and educated. From this generous legacy has evolved the Latymer Upper and Prep Schools which now stand on the site between King Street and the River Thames and educate over 1,400 boys and girls.
Pupils from the Prep, Years 7,8 and 12 gathered in the Sports Hall and were treated to an outstanding programme of musical performances by pupils from Y5, 6 and 11 as well as the Latymer Singers and the Lower School Choir. Readings were given by Toby in Y8, Joelin in Y7, Tavi and Will from Y12. Vice Captains Nina and Santiago spoke beautifully and all were commended by Mr Emerson and Ms Rutterford.
Students from Years 9, 10, 11 and 13 walked together to St Paul’s Church in Hammersmith for a service led by School Chaplain Mr Cook. The Choir sang and there were readings by Anya from Y9, Mr Nirwal, Ms Adams and Ben the School Captain. Mr Goodhew reminded us of our responsibility as Latymerians to continue Edward Latymer’s legacy and support others selflessly.
We take this day to celebrate as a community all that we stand for - the diverse and socially inclusive school that we have become; the award-winning bursary programme which ensures bright children are able to come based on their academic ability, not the ability to pay; the partnership and outreach initiatives that the Latymer Foundation continues to fund, which involve nearly 250 local schools, charities and community groups and impacts more than 1,000 local children, as well and the Latymer Uganda Project, which seeks to support 8 students with their education.
The end of the services marked the end of half term and pupils headed off for their fortnight’s break. We wish everyone a good holiday after a very busy half of term.
