Charity Activities & Events

In October, the children had great fun dressing up and coming into school in their pyjamas or onesies.

There was a very special reason for this unusual non-uniform day - it was arranged by Mr Pugh and the Charities Club to help raise funds for Little Amal for The Walk's Amal Fund with Choose Love.

On the day the children raised over £550 and they also took part in a special assembly to learn more about Little Amal and the plight of young refugees.

Then in November, two very special visitors came into the School. Emma Longthorne, one of the puppeteers and Kevin Fitzpatrick, one of the producers. Here Emma tells us more about the project:

Who is Little Amal?

Little Amal is a giant puppet of a young 9 year old Syrian girl who walked 8000km from Turkey to the UK, stopping along the route to raise awareness of the plight of refugee children. She represents the 18,292 unaccompanied foreign minors registered in Europe between 2018 and 2020 (The actual number of missing migrant children is significantly higher). These children are essentially ‘Lost in Europe’ and need our support in resettling, getting them into schools and in many instances reuniting them with their family members.

During her journey she met the leaders of the EU in Strasbourg, having walked from the Vatican where she met with the Pope. Along the route she was welcomed by villages, towns and cities who arranged events, activities, dances and artworks for her. Her walk culminated in Manchester, in November, where she was reunited with her mother and author Michael Morpurgo wrote a story about Little Amal to coincide with this event.

Little Amal visited London during half term and had a 10th birthday sleepover at The V&A; she also visited many theatres and organisations around London who held events. Mr Pugh had encouraged pupils to join Little Amal on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral during half term and welcome her to London singing ‘Consider Yourself’ from the musical ‘Oliver’!
